Back Pain in Pregnancy
Back pain in pregnancy is very common and is generally due to increased weight gain, loosened ligaments and posture shift to accommodate the enlarging uterus. If you have a history of back pain, your symptoms are likely to worsen as the baby gets heavier. The position of the baby can also make the pain worse, particularly when she has her back to your back as in oxiput posterior fetal position

When to call Your Healthcare Provider:

·

If you are also having symptoms of a bladder infection such as pain or burning with urination, or pain with applied pressure to your low back.
·
If there is any rhythmic pattern to the pain. This may indicate that you are experiencing uterine contractions.
·
You have numbness or tingling indicating spinal compression.
·
You have tried the options listed below without success

Things to try:

·

Cranio-sacral therapy, massage, spinal manipulations
·
Heat or ice packs to the low back
·
Abdominal support, create your own or buy at a maternity shop
·
Cat-cow and other positions such as leaning forward over a bar for support or sitting backwards in a straight chair to get the baby’s back off your back
·
Low heeled shoes with good support, you may need additional arch support sold at sporting good stores
·
Exercise such as swimming and biking which strengthen the body without extra stress on the joints
